Ideas for an operating system

From Tell about yourself! - #22 by mertgor :

I was thinking a GNU distro with Scheme Guile like Guix but with standard kernel and other many different ideas …

I’ll be happy to talk with you for that

Thanks happy hacking !

Perhaps one of the ideas could be developing the GNU Shepherd init system to be very robust in supervising processes, similiar to s6 but in Lisp and modifiable: s6-frontend - a frontend to the s6 ecosystem

Yes and Emacs like operating system which developers , admins , and end-users can modify easily and manage and use also

Because we want freedom !

Can we code together ? Like a jitsi meeting ?

Sure, that would be great!

How about Every sunday ? In your timezone please tell me a time and convert it to UTC+3 Istanbul timezone

Thanks !

I’m in the UTC+8 timezone, so I’ll start earliest from 10pm on Sunday (5pm Istanbul time). If it was earlier in the day for me, then I might be busy with other things.

With kind regards,

Adam

Okay let’s get ready for this week …

Can we prepare a collaborative document ?

Like live link that only we have right to edit but others can read ?

Thanks

Maybe Cryptpad ?

For a quick start my questions are listed below

  1. Live kernel patch
  2. Convergent software and hardware , continuum
  3. Training own LLMs if needed but not for advertisement for a better productivity

This live document should be alright I think.

Live kernel hack patch

Using kexec is the usual method, but what would it look like with a different OS design?

Comment by Mert Gör ( hwpplayer1 ) : self hosted services and decentralized networking should be promoted like Matrix and Element client and Mastodon

File systems research is important beside disk security and forensics

I copied what I wrote for safety of the data Thanks Adam !

Convergent software and hardware: Continuum

See: Lisp Machines, Bootstrappable Builds, etc

LLM usage, and for what purposes

Would training our own LLMs be very time-consuming to do? We’d need to train them on libre data to avoid issues with including the outputs anywhere.

Yes agree but this is a long term goal suggestion to get started we can train the model with a game like go and chess or other “simple” board games

Oh, I completely missed that  Yes, training models to play games would be very fun.

I couldn’t find a way to restrict Cryptpad editing without restricting who can access it altogether, so the document is open for now. Hopefully other people can contribute to it too.
